I don’t recall exactly what made me decide to take Ms. Petri’s Latin class when I went into the seventh grade. But the three years in her tutelage were, for the most part, really fun! Okay, conjugating verbs was not the fun part. But it was a class I looked forward to. I must say, three years of French or Spanish might have given me basic language skills that I would have put to use more often.

On the other hand, when I paint a picture that includes the common lilac, I can make the title somewhat less prosaic by using the Latin name for the plant!

Here’s an anomaly for me. One color and no trees whatsoever! This painting is a revisitation of a view from a sailing vacation Jackie and I enjoyed with friends in the British Virgin Islands. I can almost feel the cool breeze and the warm Caribbean sun when looking at this painting. Great memories.

Hoist the sail, see how the mainsail sets, set a course from Virgin Gorda Sound: N18 42.100 W64 24.200 and GO! Just watch out for the coral, don’t get too far east of the rhumb line and you’ll be fine. Lobster for lunch!

I recently sat down for a conversation with my son in law Austin for his monthly podcast “Hidden Homes Show.” The subject of our conversation ranged from art and music, to the pros and cons of growth in our small mountain town. With a healthy dose of nostalgic reminiscing thrown in for good measure!

It’s beautiful summer weather here in Santa Fe. Join us at Ventana Fine Art Thursday evening. The road will be closed to traffic to make way for The Art Stroll from 5-7 pm. Ventana will sponsor a gin tasting, offering tiny nips of gin from New Mexico, California, Canada, Japan, and Iceland. We’ll have conversations about my work. Including my new juniper paintings!

Come enjoy my latest work and a couple nips of gin in the warmth of an art-filled early summer evening at Ventana.

I’m heading south this Thursday for my annual exhibit at Ventana Fine Art. I can’t wait to see my 32 newest paintings on the walls of my all time favorite Santa Fe gallery. This may be the 25th year in a row that I’ve had a show open in Santa Fe in early July, but who’s counting! In summers past I’ve called time out and allowed myself a bit of a summer vacation after the show opens. This summer I’m keeping the hammer down and jumping right back in the studio. Happily jumping right back in!

Pastel sketches are an integral part of my art making practice. These four small pieces are one step away from a larger, perhaps very much larger, oil painting.

Typically I’ll work out compositional and color issues in pastel where I can work very quickly and directly. Honestly, this is often where the unbridled creativity happens. Maybe that’s why I love these pastels so much! What do you think?

Feels good to have a pastel in hand again! I’ve been happily working away in oil to keep up with demand for my work. But it has been a long hiatus. Too long.

I think my work in general leans toward a decidedly intuitive approach to art making. But with the directness of pastel it becomes even more so. Sometimes it feels as though my oil paintings are trying to “catch up” with my pastels. I’m enthralled with this warm manganese violet color that turned up!

A little haze lifting, a row of young deciduous trees, sun filtered through the foliage, that’s more than enough information to get me started on a painting!

I love the quality of light in this one, even if it does lean a bit more toward realism than I typically prefer.

Often I’ll paint from a pastel sketch that I’ve made on location. This painting was done from memory, a different approach but not unusual for me.

The scene is a recollection of a fall visit to an old friend’s orchard on the east shore of Flathead Lake. There are fruit trees galore along the lake. An abundance of apples, apricots, plums, and cherries fill the roadside stands and local grocery stores every fall here in Northwest Montana.
