All Good Things Must Come To An End

September 15, 2020

In spite of it all we DID have a good summer. Lots of sailboat racing, albeit without the usual socializing after the races! And we enjoyed clear blue skies in Northwest Montana until this past weekend when the jet stream brought us smoke from the west.

Each summer the crew of Valkyrie, our 33 foot racing sloop, sets out to accomplish three things: win the Tuesday night Sail Montana Series, win The Montana Cup, and win The Labor Day Regatta. This year we came close. First in The Sail Montana Series, second in The Montana Cup, and first in The Labor Day Regatta. This was our second year in a row to narrowly miss accomplishing all three, after making it happen in 2018. We’ll be tougher in 2021!

We hope you found some ways to have fun this summer too!

This Is A First

September 8, 2020

Thanks to all the artists who are participating, and to all the folks who showed up for the opening of the first ever Montana Pastel Society Member’s Exhibit. It’s great to be building a community of talented artists and connecting to a world of art lovers!

I’m inspired by the outstanding pastel art on the walls of Montana Modern Fine Art. The work is on display through the end of September. Stop by. We’ll be smiling behind our masks!

Now That I Think About It

August 25, 2020

Well, I thought I had a finished painting when I posted last week! But as I was looking at the painting I imagined a grove of aspen in front of the structure. Honestly, it didn’t take a lot of imagination since there actually IS a grove of aspen in front of the structure.

Years ago, when Terry Nelson and I worked together, our mantra was “Think It, Do It.” So when that thought crossed my mind, I was bound to paint that aspen grove!

Take One

August 19, 2020

I was sketching at the south edge of town last week and was drawn to this great old dairy barn. Old timers will remember it as being just outside of town, now it’s surrounded by businesses.  Locals would probably recognize it more easily had I not invoked my artistic license and painted it red like it actually is.

I thought the painting was done,  but I now imagine it with the grove of aspens, that I very deliberately left out, included in the painting! A new pic soon.

Sail Away

August 11, 2020

It seems to be a blue filled world in the summertime.  Everywhere I look, everywhere I go, blue, blue, and bluer!

Case in point: Pale phathlo blue sky above Ultramarine blue water, as my grandson Oliver and crew sail away for a light air, early morning race on spectacularly blue Flathead Lake.

As I head into my studio, I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll be reaching for some shade of that beautiful color, you guessed it,  blue!

Blue on Blue

July 28, 2020

Sometimes I just can’t get enough of a good thing! Today it’s blue, blue, and more blue.

For those of you who have an interest in such things, the blues I’ve used here are: Cerulean Blue, Phthalo Blue RS, Phthalo Blue GS, Ultramarine Blue Dark, Phthalo Turquoise, Prussian Blue, and Genuine Lapis Lazuli. Whew!

Home Again

July 22, 2020

I’m back from Santa Fe! It was a short but gratifying trip. As usual the gang at Ventana Fine Art did a beautiful job for me. The work looks wonderful in the gallery. If you can’t get to Santa Fe to see the show, take a look online at ventanafineart.com.

Next summer we’ll all get together. I promise!

Woodland Enchantment: Marshall Noice

July 14, 2020

I’m happy to say I’ll be in Santa Fe for the weekend!  My show at Ventana Fine Art, 400 Canyon Road, opens Friday, July 17th. I can’t wait to see my newest work hanging on the walls of my all time favorite Santa Fe Gallery!

I’ll be at the gallery Friday evening. I’ll be painting in the sculpture garden at the gallery on Saturday and Sunday. Drop by if you can. I’ll be happy to see you, from a safe distance! I’ll be the guy with a colorful paintbrush and a black facemask!

Can We Talk About It?

July 7, 2020

I’m interested in having conversations, looking at work, comparing notes, and learning with other pastel painters. So I think it’s time for me to start the process of building a community!

Here’s the scoop. We begin by establishing the Montana Pastel Society. Sounds pretty official doesn’t it!

For the most part, it’s about getting together with folks that have pastel art in common. Artists are often interesting people to talk to.

We’ll see if any other folks want to join. We’ll have a website, Facebook page, and Instagram account. All the usual web based info dissemination devices. And we’ll figure out ways to get together. Virtually to begin with. But I think workshops and art exhibitions will be an important part of the equation. Stay tuned, more soon!

Opposites Attract

June 30, 2020

I’m digging into complementary color combinations. Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. It’s tried and true, very simple, but not without interest to me. I always discover something when I move forward with an idea, even a simple idea. Here’s an example of red, red orange, and red violet paired with green, blue green, and yellow green. I like it!  I’ll post more combinations on Instagram as the experimentation continues. Stay tuned!
